AI Agents vs. Agentic AI

The critical distinction.

Everyone's building "AI agents" now.

But most conversations conflate two fundamentally different approaches: the focused specialist and the autonomous orchestra. This isn't semantic nitpicking – the distinction determines whether your AI investment becomes a reliable workhorse or an expensive science experiment.

The confusion stems from one word doing double duty. When someone says "AI agent," they might mean a chatbot that answers FAQs or a self-directing system that researches markets, writes strategies, and fact-checks itself. These aren't variations of the same thing – they're different species entirely.

AI Agent: The Specialist

Think of an AI agent as a single-minded expert. It senses, decides, and acts only within the narrow lane you define. Point it at a precise goal – "summarise this PDF," "flag profanity," "pull yesterday's sales data" – and it delivers, then waits for the next order.

No wandering. No big-picture dreams. No initiative beyond its programmed parameters.
